The 34 year-old officer, who has not been named, was arrested after the death of an unnamed 64-year-old woman in Hillingdon, north London.

While a Metropolitan Police spokesman refused to say what the policeman did in the force The Daily Telegraph understands he was a Firearms Licensing Officer.

The spokesman said the officer was arrested at his workplace on Wednesday after the ”altercation” on Tueday afternoon. The woman later died. It is believed the incident occurred after an altercation involved motorists.

“I did not see anything, but a police officer knocked on the door and asked if she had seen a road rage accident,” one resident said.

The officer, who was off duty at the time, was last night being questioned at a south London police station.

The Scotland Yard spokesman said: ”A serving Metropolitan Police officer has been arrested in connection with the death of a woman in Hillingdon on Tuesday afternoon.

”The 34-year-old officer, who works in Central Operations, was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter this afternoon, Wednesday November 17, at his place of work and is currently in custody at a south London police station.

”The arrest follows an altercation that occurred in Snowden Avenue, Hillingdon, at approximately 4.30pm on Tuesday November 16, after which a 64-year-old woman died. Next of kin have been informed.”

”The officer was off duty at the time. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and post-mortem examination will take place tomorrow.”

He added: ”Officers believe they know the identity of the deceased but await formal identification.

”Directorate of Professional Standards is aware and has informed the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

”Anyone who was in and around the Snowden Avenue area at the time of the incident is asked to call the incident room on 020 8247 7821. Anyone who wishes to give information anonymously can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
